I'm way late on reading this, but I loved it. The breakfast scene was so sweet, and probably good therapy for Roy, too, to be standing at the stove.
The way you're writing Roy serves to highlight just how damaged he is. He's so cautious, where he used to be calculating. It will be interesting to see who makes the first move. Al seems as if he might, but is held back by concern for Roy, and maybe a lack of experience.
