It wasn't the kind of thing Jean told anyone about, not even Rico. It wasn't a regular thing, either; just on rare occasions, when the jobs were hard, the nights were long, and sleep was hard to come by. The first time, he'd seemed worried, asked her afterward why she'd done it.

She'd shrugged, wiped her mouth with the back of her hand, and said, "You told me to."

He'd thrown her out of the room then and it was almost eight months before he asked her to do it again.

The fourth time, she'd accidentally wakened Henrietta when she'd come back to the room they shared and the other girl had asked her where she'd been. She wondered if she ought to keep it a secret, but Jean hadn't actually said not to tell anyone. It wasn't like she talked to a lot of people, anyway.

"In Jean's room," she'd answered, and watched Henrietta's eyes flicker with something like betrayal and jealousy, then curiosity.

"Is it... good?" Henrietta asked, hesitating, and it was only then that Rico realized her roommate would probably like to know what it was like with her own handler.

"It's not bad," Rico said, crawling into bed. The way she figured it, at least she had hands and a mouth to do this sort of thing with; at least she could get out of bed on her own two feet to go sneaking down to Jean's room. As long as this job kept her body working, nothing it entailed was going to frighten her off.

"Hm," Henrietta said, flopping over onto her back. "Night, Rico."

"Night, Etta."

Sleep came effortlessly, and without dreams.
