River likes to look at things intensely, likes to watch them for a long time, long past the time Kaylee's attention - or anyone else's, really - would have wavered and collapsed. Kaylee knows this, so it isn't any real surprise when she spies River lingering on the stairs outside the cockpit, balanced on her tip-toes, hair sliding along her shoulders and neck until she pushes it away impatiently, needing to see.

For once, though, Kaylee wants to know what she's looking at like that. There shouldn't be anyone there - Wash set the ship on auto and went to bed hours ago. They've got a long way to travel through the black before it's time to land anywhere.

She walks softly until she's standing beside River, who doesn't seem surprised at her presence, only gives her a silent "shh" motion with one graceful finger against her lips.

"He's having a good dream," River murmurs. "Don't wake him yet."

Kaylee peers past her and sees the captain, slouched in the pilot's chair, tired eyes closed and that jaw that is so often clenched with one stress or another now slack with sleep. One of his hands rests on Serenity's switchboard; the other is cupped over his heart.

It makes Kaylee's heart skip a protective, mother-like beat and she glances at River out of the corner of her eye, both of them sharing a secret smile.
