Notes: I've had this little scene in my head for ages. Doesn't exactly SPOIL chapters 56 & 57 of the manga, but it definitely helps if you've read them!!
His arm was so tight around her midsection that she could barely breathe, and she thought she felt something wet against the back of her shoulder. Carefully, she turned so that she could face him.
“Roy?” she asked quietly, her hand going out to rest on his face. It was wet, and she was instantly worried. “What’s wrong?”
“I’m scared, Riza,” he answered in a hoarse whisper. She knew that confession cost him, and she pressed as closely to him as she could get, accepting the neediness of his touch. “I don’t trust him, and now...” His breath hitched and as he tucked his face into her neck, she could feel the way his teeth were bared with the effort of restraining his emotions.
“It’s all right, Roy,” she whispered, smoothing his hair.
”It’s dangerous,” he argued. “I lost Maes, and...”
She swallowed her next words. She’d been about to remind him that he could trust her, even if he didn’t trust the fuhrer, but he’d trusted Maes, too.
“I know,” she murmured instead, cuddling him close. “I’m scared too.” There, that was her confession, and her voice tremored as she made it. “At least they kept us both in Central. At least...”
“They knew they couldn’t keep me here if you weren’t here,” he said, a hard edge to his tone. “They know I couldn’t handle it.”
“Me, neither,” Riza assured him, feathering kisses across his brow and over his face until she found his mouth. He rolled her onto her back, kissing her so fiercely she thought her jaw might crack, but she was kissing him back with just as much fervor.
Their hands clutched at each other’s bodies, assuring themselves that, whatever tomorrow might bring, they were together for now.
