I decided I wanted to try a Mal/River, and that I would title it after the very first song that played on my iTunes. So I hit random, and U2 started singing "Desire" and I thought - oh hell, that should be easy. It kind of was, although I have to apologize for the weird POV. It's through Mal's eyes but with River's voice, so maybe it's River-inside-Mal's head doing all the narrating. *grins* And now, at 3 AM, I'm going to bed.

Disclaimer: Love (and narcissism), not money. The summary and the line of dialogue it comes from is blatantly and lovingly stolen from a line in Joss Whedon's latest, greatest Serenity. The title itself is a tip of the hat to my beloved Bob Dylan.
Author’s Notes: For artemis2050, who gave me the prompt to start this, and mollita who held my hand through the last stages. This is an AU that takes place ten years after X1 would have, only Logan and Rogue never met... until now, in that same rundown bar in Laughlin City. Older and jaded, and with a history behind her that sounds a lot like comic-Rogue, Marie finally meets Logan, and this is the story of what happens then. You like happy endings? Your train don't unload at this station. :-)

This is a one-shot. Anyone who asks for a sequel will be unceremoniously duct-taped and dumped into the hold for a month.
