Sanzo's fingers trembled as they tightened around his cigarette. His teeth ground together so hard he could almost hear it over the patter of the rain outside. All the acolytes of the temple that was housing them were giving his room a wide berth and Sanzo was grateful for it, for lack of a better word. He wasn't in the mood to try to get bloodstains out of his sutra.

In an attempt to distract himself from the nightmares that lurked in the rainy night, Sanzo forced his thoughts onto other things. He wondered how Hakkai was holding up. They'd been known to keep each other company on nights like these, quiet companions in their tortured memories, but Hakkai was sharing a room with Gojyo tonight. Sanzo thought the kappa knew his friend well enough that Hakkai was probably okay. The ash fell from the tip of Sanzo's cigarette and he told himself he'd done it on purpose, not because his hands were shaking.

The door opened and Sanzo stiffened, jaw clenching, free hand reaching into the sleeve of his robe. He inhaled deeply, searching for the smell of incense that clung to the acolytes' robes. He smelled something fresh and wild, like a wind-whipped rain, like earth and stone, and his fingers relaxed around the handle of his gun.

"Close the door, monkey," Sanzo growled. "And don't make noise."

To his surprise, the door closed quietly and he barely heard the movement of bare feet across the stone floor. It amazed him sometimes how quiet the boy could be when he was trying. The sense of a presence next to him, of power bound and golden, made him twitch. He switched his cigarette to his other hand to keep from dropping ash in Goku's hair. Several long minutes later, Sanzo was being driven to distraction by Goku's utter silence and stillness. It wasn't natural. He turned and looked down at the tousled brown hair sticking up haphazardly over the gold limiter.

"Goku?"

Huge golden eyes turned up toward him and Sanzo frowned at the concern and fear evident in them.

"It'll stop," Goku said softly and Sanzo blinked in confusion. He'd missed something, somewhere. "The rain," Goku continued, still abnormally subdued. "I know you don't like it. Neither does Hakkai. But it'll stop."

Sanzo flinched, surprised. He had been so occupied trying to discern the reason for Goku's silence that he hadn't even heard the rain for the past few minutes. He didn't quite smile but his lips twitched and he reached over to tousle Goku's hair.

"So it will," Sanzo mused, and he noticed that his hand on Goku's head didn't tremble. "So it will."
