It wasn't like he didn't know what kind of scoundrel his captain was. It was a playful scoundrel, and he played it as well as he played the fearsome pirate. Love and war were like that - if you could pretend one, you could pretend the other.
So it didn't bother him too much to see his captain wink at the dashing young top-hatted man at the ceremony where the errant prince and the fallen star were married. It made him roll his eyes like he always had anytime the war-lord act had gone too far into the ridiculous.
He rolled his eyes even more when the man slyly mentioned it on the way home, like he thought to arouse some jealousy.
In the end, the captain was the one with a curious frown on his face, when his roguish flirting brought no reaction at all.
"But don't you think he's too young for me?"
"You're only as young as you feel, sir."
"But he's engaged! Practically married!"
"Then you really should learn to be more subtle about announcing your intentions in public, sir."
"He lives in bloody England, for goodness' sakes."
"Distance is a mere inconvenience to true love, sir."
"Blast it all, why don't you disapprove?"
"Would my disapproval make any difference? Sir."
Silence, then, that ticked on for long minutes. He was tempted to start humming Offenbach as he watched his captain grow more and more uncomfortable.
"Your opinion makes all the difference in the world to me."
"Then may I speak freely, sir?"
"Damn it, man, of course you may speak freely. You've been speaking freely every damn day you've been on my damn ship."
Not so freely as I'd wished. But instead of saying anything at all, he leaned across the desk and kissed his captain.
