Title: Some Other Beginning
Author: m.jules
Rating: Hard R for the whole thing
Summary: "Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end." Alphonse Elric helps Roy Mustang face life after more tragedy than one man should endure and finds something for himself in the process.
Pairing: mainly Roy/Al, with hints of and references to others. (Including, but not limited to, Ed/Winry, Al/Paninya, Gracia/Maes/Roy/Riza, and Al/Elicia.)
Disclaimer: Arakawa would KILL me. I bow low in supplication.
Author's Notes: This was meant to be "The Story That Proves In-Character Roy/Al Is Possible." Don't know if it worked. For my [livejournal.com profile] 7stages claim, prompt "New every morning."

Thank you to the usual suspects, and so, so sorry for lack of an update last week. I was in California - the opposite coast from where I normally am - to celebrate my birthday. I hope you guys won't hold it against me.

Also, if anyone was waiting to read "Midnight Confessions" (the one-sided Elicia/Al fic I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] fma_fuh_q) for fear of being spoiled, that story takes place right around the same time as this chapter, so no fear of being spoiled anymore. You can find it here.

I am posting one chapter every other Monday. Except on the occasion of birthdays, apparently. Previous chapters can be found here.

Roy grunted softly as the mattress shifted with Al’s weight when his lover crawled into the bed. Al settled on his side, his back to Roy, and Roy curled up behind him, one arm slung over Al’s narrow waist. Al hummed in approval, wiggling a little to get comfortable. Alphonse’s hair was still in a ponytail and Roy moved his hand long enough to tug the tie out.

“Roy,” Al complained mildly. “It’s going to be tangled in the morning.”

“I’ll brush it out,” Roy placated, burying his nose in the loose golden locks. He loved Al’s hair. When the younger man had suggested growing it out, Roy had been uncertain at first. Alphonse was extremely handsome with his short-cut hair, bangs falling rakishly over his eyes, and Roy didn’t know how he’d like it longer. They had both decided that if they didn’t like it, Al could always cut it later. They’d found out in short order, however, that the length of his hair didn’t detract from Al’s good looks at all – if anything, the ponytail made him more striking – and Roy absolutely loved running his hands through it.

Al seemed to accept that, and Roy settled in against him, already relaxing. He’d never realized how accustomed he would become to sleeping with his lover in his arms; never expected that little detail to be the difference between a peaceful sleep and a restless night, but then again, he hadn’t really anticipated anything about this relationship. All those years ago, he’d certainly never imagined that the sweet-voiced, mild-mannered younger brother of the Fullmetal Alchemist would be his lover, his partner. It seemed odd when he thought about how long he’d known Alphonse and how young the boy had been when they’d first met.

There was a soft thump and the feel of a small weight hitting the mattress and Roy inwardly grumbled. Al’s breath had already begun to even out as sleep crept over him, so Mustang didn’t say anything aloud, but he canted his eye downward toward the grey-and-white cat that sat perched on the end of their mattress. That had been a fight that Al had won – rather underhandedly, Roy thought. Roy hadn’t been a fan of allowing Tana to sleep with them, but Al claimed Roy had, in fact, agreed to it. Of course, he’d agreed to it while his cock was halfway down Al’s throat, so he didn’t exactly remember, but he figured he’d take Al’s word for it.

Still, just because Tana got to sleep on the bed with them didn’t mean she could sleep on Roy, which she was inordinately fond of, and he glared to make sure she remembered this.

She sneezed as if to say what she thought about that , and Al stirred in Roy’s arms. Roy kissed the warm skin of Al’s shoulder and the younger man shifted a little, turning onto his back. He opened sleepy eyes to meet Roy’s, a little smile creeping across his face.

“Sorry,” he said quietly. “Guess I’m more tired than I thought.”

“Don’t worry about it,” Roy soothed, letting his fingertips sift through Al’s hair. “I’m kind of tired myself. Just can’t sleep.”

“Hm,” Al acknowledged, leaning in to Roy’s petting. He brought one hand over to stroke Roy’s stomach, thumb tracing the lines in the older man’s abs. Roy was still fit and muscular, despite his age and injury. “What are your plans for tomorrow?” he murmured, and Roy chuckled.

“Going to wear me out with conversation instead of sex?” Roy teased and Al shot him a disapproving half-frown. Roy kissed the tip of Al’s nose in penance before actually answering the question. “Nothing tomorrow morning, though parliament wants my quarterly report by three in the afternoon.”

Al nodded, and Roy wondered if the younger man remembered that tomorrow was, in fact, their seven-year anniversary.

“What are your plans?” Roy prodded, and Al shrugged, a yawn overtaking him mid-action.

“I think I’m going to go talk to Tanner Jenkens about the storefront he’s got for rent down near the market,” he finally said. “I think it might be a good place to open up the pharmacy.”

Roy nodded. With all of Al’s background in herbal studies and green alchemy, the younger man had been talking about opening an apothecary for quite a while. They certainly had the money, and Alphonse more than had the skill. Not to mention that, as a business owner, Jenkens was active in the politics of Central and he liked what Roy had to say about things in Parliament. These days, everyone knew that Alphonse was Roy's companion, though they didn't know just how much anyone guessed about how far that companionship went.

“That might be a good idea,” Roy agreed. “It’s a good location.”

Al hummed, his eyes starting to close again. “Thought I’d go after lunch tomorrow, catch him in the afternoon lull at his office.” His voice was already fading at the end of the sentence, and Roy smiled a little, settling down beside his young lover. Al stirred at the movement, waking just enough to turn his head and catch Roy’s mouth in a lazy, tender kiss.

Roy closed his eyes and savored the taste of his lover’s mouth until the kiss faded, Al’s quiet breathing betraying that the man had fallen asleep already. Roy breathed deep, feeling his own body relaxing into slumber, and even the pressure of Tana making a bed out of his hip couldn’t shatter the peace he felt.

It was all Alphonse could do not to run all the way back from Tanner’s office, but he restrained himself. His hands were shoved deep into his pockets to keep them from punching the air in celebration but the sparkle in his eyes and the happy tune he whistled gave away his good mood nonetheless. Tanner had been more than happy to rent the storefront to Al and had even given him a better price than Alphonse had been expecting. If all went well, he could have the pharmacy opened in a matter of months.

He pulled out his pocket watch and flipped open the cover, a little disappointed when he saw that it was half-past three. Roy would be in meetings with parliament for at least another three hours. He stopped by Gracia’s house on his way home, even though it was a few blocks out of the way, needing to share his good news with someone.

She congratulated him with a hug, then asked how Roy was, as she always did. Al wondered that he never felt awkward answering that question, knowing that the woman had once been Roy’s lover, but it didn't bother him at all, and he told her about Mustang and especially about Tana. Though she was technically Al’s pet, the cat had targeted Roy as a goal to be conquered, and their battles were epic in scope and strategy. Gracia always laughed at each new story, and on the occasions that Elicia was there to hear them – like today – the fourteen-year-old was always amused with them as well.

Al asked Elicia how school was and was treated to a blush and a mumbled, “I have homework to do,” before she retreated upstairs. Al gave Gracia a baffled look and the woman shrugged lightly, laughter shining in her eyes until they heard Elicia’s bedroom door close.

“She’s just discovering boys,” Gracia answered in a low voice, not wanting to embarrass her daughter. “The teenage years are here already.”

Al chuckled, shaking his head. “I would imagine that they’re not exactly oblivious to her, either,” he noted. Gracia and Maes’ daughter was a testament to her parents’ good genes, having inherited all the beauty of her mother and the quick wit of her father, though the latter rarely made an appearance these days thanks to the awkwardness of adolescence.

“Well, I’d better get home,” he said. “I wanted to make dinner tonight before Roy gets home. Today is our anniversary, and though he hasn’t said anything about it, I doubt he’s forgotten.”

“I can guarantee you he hasn’t forgotten,” Gracia laughed. “That man is the most hopeless romantic I’ve ever met. He used to remind Maes when our anniversary was.”

Al chuckled. He could definitely believe that about his lover. With one last embrace and Gracia offering her congratulations and requesting he pass them along to Roy, along with an invitation to come to dinner sometime, he left the Hughes’ house and headed home. He unlocked the front door and hung his coat up on the coat rack just inside, calling out a hello to Tana who was nowhere to be seen. He rolled up his sleeves as he strode into the kitchen then stopped dead at the sight that greeted him.

In the center of the table was a cut-crystal vase practically overflowing with roses. He recognized them as being from Roy’s own garden – no florist in town had petals as perfect as the ones Roy cultivated – and he was caught midway between being touched and being very amused. He snorted and shook his head, then walked forward and plucked the little white card out of the midst of the greenery. He flipped it open, not knowing quite what to expect. If it says something like 'There's one for every moment I thought of you,' I'm going to deck him when he gets home. In Roy’s strong, fluid handwriting were the simple words, Happy Anniversary, and Mustang’s signature.

Al chuckled fondly and picked up the vase to remove it from the kitchen. It would only be in the way while he was cooking. Romantic indeed.

Roy sighed with relief at the sight of his front door. His body had regained most of its strength despite his weak leg, but maybe walking back from the parliament buildings had been a bit overambitious. He was looking forward to his armchair and maybe a shot of brandy to help relieve the ache that seemed to have settled into the mended bone. He made it through the door, leaning more heavily on his cane than he would like to admit, and struggled for a moment with getting his coat off and hung up without putting too much weight on his leg.

The was a loud meow as a flash of grey fur shot into the foyer from the general direction of the kitchen, and Roy cursed inventively as Tana rubbed against his leg. His injured one.

“Go on, brat,” he grumbled, using the cane to push her away. “I don’t have patience for you right now.” He made his way through the house, following the sounds of dinner preparation that he could hear in the kitchen. Tana followed on his heels, meowing at him every few steps, and Al laughed as they entered the kitchen, looking up from the sauce he was stirring. The table was set and almost everything was on it except the whole roasted chicken that Al was preparing to pour a honey glaze over.

There was only one thing missing. Where were the roses?

Al saw the way Roy’s eyes scanned the room, and Roy turned a questioning look on the younger man, unwilling to ask it aloud.

“Looking for the flowers?” Al asked, and Roy frowned, unable to discern the tone of his voice. He nodded slowly, and Al arched an eyebrow. “Just because I grew my hair out doesn’t mean I’m going to start wearing a dress and apron for you,” Al noted, and Roy was momentarily taken aback until he noticed the twitch at the corner of the younger man’s mouth.

“You mean you don’t already?” Roy joked lightly, sinking into his chair.

Al gave him a mock-glare but couldn’t keep it up and finally chuckled. “They’re in the bedroom,” he said. “I didn’t want the heat to wilt them. They were too pretty.”

Roy nodded and smiled, using the tip of his cane to nudge Tana away from his feet. Al noticed, grinning.

“I’ve been calling for her all afternoon,” he said as Roy shifted in his chair, the strain of walking all too obvious on the man’s exotic features. “You come home and don’t even say a word and she’s all over you.” Despite Roy’s efforts, Tana was, in fact, wrapping herself around the legs of Roy’s chair and occasionally Roy’s legs.

Roy made a noise of frustrated amusement and Al grinned at him. “Long day at parliament?” the younger man asked as he took the saucepan off the stove, flicking off the gas range. He began drizzling the glaze over the chicken and Roy watched, his mouth watering a little at the scent. He hadn’t realized how hungry he was.

“It’s always a long day in parliament,” Roy answered, spotting a bottle of wine and the corkscrew on the table. Alphonse hadn’t opened it yet. He picked them up and began opening the bottle. “How did things go with Jenkens?”

“I got the shop,” Al answered, his voice brimming with excitement as he brought the chicken to the table, setting the platter down between their plates, a knife resting on the platter. “I can probably start moving things in as early as next month.”

“Congratulations,” Roy said, genuine pleasure on his face.

“Oh, yes, speaking of, Gracia said to tell you hello and happy anniversary,” Al said. Roy’s eyes went distant for the briefest of moments before he finally nodded and took Al’s glass, tilting it to pour the merlot into it.

“Thank you,” he said, handing Al’s glass back to him and filling his own. Al held his glass out and Roy did the same, smiling as Al clinked them together lightly in a toast.

“Happy anniversary, Roy,” he smiled, and Roy smiled back.

“Happy anniversary.”

Happily relaxed with the meal and two glasses of wine each, their conversation on the couch had begun including fewer words and more touches until Al, slightly breathless as Roy’s mouth found the sensitive spot on the side of his neck, suggested they go upstairs. Roy hummed his agreement but took his time adoring the flesh under his mouth, and by the time he pulled away and got to his feet, Al’s legs felt a little rubbery.

They abstained by necessity on the way upstairs, taking the trip more slowly than they would have liked in deference to Roy’s leg, and by the time they reached the top of the stairs, Al’s head was a little clearer. Roy made it to the bedroom door ahead of him, and the older man stopped in the doorway, throwing back his head and laughing.

Al shoved him lightly, sending him stumbling into the room, and Roy reached back to grab Al’s arm, pulling the younger man in with him and using it to steady himself.

All around the room, candles lit the room with a warm golden glow, and while the vase of roses was indeed on their dresser, there were a couple of handfuls of petals scattered over the bed.

Still snickering, Roy turned to Al, sliding his arms around his lover’s waist. “So,” he said, barely able to talk through his mirth, “Are we going dress-shopping tomorrow?”

Al kissed him harshly and pushed him down to the bed, climbing over him and pinning Roy’s wrists to the mattress. “Yes,” he rumbled against Roy’s mouth as he rolled his hips against the other man’s, drawing a sharp gasp from Mustang. “For you.”
