Title: perfect too-bright burning contentment
Author: m.jules
Fandom: Melusine series
Pairing: Felix/Mildmay
Timeline: End of Melusine.
Disclaimer: Not mine. Not for money.
I blamed it on the sun. So damned bright I couldn't see nothin', and it weren't like I was all harps and fiddles anyway, what with the way the healin' took almost as much out of me as the hurtin'. But the gardens were nice, now that I knew I could get up from where I was layin' in the grass, and if I couldn't, I had someone to help me up. Felix was sittin' a ways away, readin' quiet-like. I could hear the pages turnin' every so often, with long pauses in between when I knew he was gettin' lost in his own head. Not the way he used to at the bottom of the well, but just followin' some thought off on a wanderin' path.
It was kinda comfortin', just havin' him so close. I didn't wanna admit it, what with all the time I'd spent takin' care of him, makin' sure he was gonna make one more step, that he was gonna come out alive on the other side, but ain't no use in pretendin' I didn't like havin' him close now that he was the stronger one.
I guess I musta dozed off, what with the sun so bright overhead I could see the blood rushin' in my eyelids with 'em closed, all orange and red and alive, 'cause the next thing I knew was somethin' ticklin' my face, like long leaves of grass brushin' over my skin. I opened my eyes and almost screamed with the startlement of seein' someone's -- Felix's -- face so close, but I kept my mouth shut, tongue firmly pressed against the back of my teeth to keep the yell from tumblin' out.
I didn't know what had gotten into him, and I admit, for just a second, I thought he'd tumbled off whatever topside log he'd been sittin' on and was right back under the dark water. But then he was even closer and all I knew was the dry heat of his lips on mine. I froze, like the sunlight was made of ice, freezin' and burnin' me all at once, but I couldn't push him away, no matter how weird it was.
I ain't molly, I thought, wanted to say, but Felix had his eyes closed and even up close I could see he looked so... content, and there was nothin' for it but close my own eyes and let my nervous, flailin' hands settle on his back. He sighed then and I felt his lips curve into a smile against mine. And behind my eyes, I could still see the sun, bright and blindin' and burnin' us together.
