The first time Greed saw the girl, It understood instantly why the mention of her name always brought the young prince raging to the surface, the overthrow quick and forceful and clean. The sight of her amplified the reaction by infinity and it was the first time Greed had wondered if It could be expelled from the body It inhabited. If that ever happened, It felt certain it would be over this girl.
Greed didn’t remember what had happened in Its former incarnation so It was aware Its opinion might be biased, but all the same, It was pretty sure It had seen – and had – Its share of beautiful women. It didn’t see how any of them could have surpassed this one.
“Now I know,” It said to the young prince as they crouched on the rooftop together, watching the moonlight sink into the midnight of her hair the way Greed’s fingers ached to. Or was it Ling who wanted to wrap that long, silky hair around his fist and tilt her head back, baring her throat to the caress of starlight and kisses? “Now I know why you are so strong when you fight me for her.”
“Yes,” Ling said solemnly, his voice guttural and almost rough. “My greed for her is greater than your greed for everything else.”

It made no pretense when it came to seducing her. It could have used her young master’s mannerisms, his voice – It was already using his body – and made her think that It had given way to him yet again. But It wanted to talk to her and Ling was tired of fighting. They had been in Ran Fan’s company for nearly a week, traveling to Rush Valley and then finding an automail mechanic in secret while avoiding Winry. Greed was never tired and he almost felt sorry for the valiant struggle Ling put forth when It approached Ran Fan late one night.
Strain showed on her face, and just a hint of uneasiness. She bore the pain of her injury with barely a grimace every day though the journey was taxing. Her surgery was scheduled to begin the next day and the mountains around Rush Valley were cold at night. It had taken to asking her how she was, even when the young prince was too tired to ask the question himself. Ling had good reasons to value this girl and Greed’s oldest motto had to do with not wasting useful things – or beautiful ones.
“Are you afraid?” It asked as it coiled the young prince’s body next to her. “I heard it hurts a lot.”
“Pain is temporary,” she responded coolly, not looking at It. “It is a means to an end.”
Greed wondered if she knew which of them was speaking to her; she treated them both the same. To test this, It reached out a hand to feather over her loose hair. Since the loss of her arm, she wore the tresses down, unable to bind it up as Ling’s memories told Greed she had once done. Secretly, It found the looser style preferable, even if the reasons were not.
She didn’t flinch, didn’t give any sign that she even noticed the improper touch except a light flush that spread over her cheeks, barely discernable in the moonlight.
“And beauty?” It asked at her ear, feeling appetites awakening and recognizing with a smile that the hunger was not all Its own. “Is that a means to an end?”
“It can be,” she acknowledged.
“Pleasure?” Its fingers sank into the silky locks, a shudder of delight running through It at the texture. How lucky for Greed that It inhabited the body of a boy with such a pleasing companion.
“That as well,” she answered and Greed did not think It imagined the slight waver in her voice, a tiny hitch in her breath. It smirked.
“Are pleasure and pain the same, then?” Greed continued, fingers sliding underneath the collar of her loose shirt. She shivered but did not resist. “And beauty?”
“Yes,” she whispered. “They are all temporary.”
It undressed her slowly, taking the time to be gentle with the bandages that covered her wound, unwinding enough of them that It could run possessive hands over her breasts. Within, It felt Ling struggling to breach surface, fighting every movement, trying to take back control of his own body, but it was too late and he was too exhausted.
Ran Fan offered no resistance, not a word or a motion to forestall her seducer, and Greed licked down her body and savored her taste on Its tongue. She was tight, extremely so, and It realized with a start that the former owner of the body It used had never taken what could have been his. Maybe you are not so greedy after all, young prince, It said.
It was gentle when It pushed inside her – there was no wisdom in spoiling something It wanted to return to, after all – and she bit her lip and closed her eyes, remaining bravely silent when her flesh broke to admit Its entrance. It stilled, giving her a moment before It began to move slowly, soothingly.
It knew the others would call It weak for taking such pity on humans but It knew the value of having human allies. How else would It get what It wanted? It eased back, gently pushing Ling to the forefront. The strength of the boy’s wanting – greed – for her deserved a reward.
Ling gasped and his body began to tremble, and Greed smiled inwardly as the young prince realized exactly what was happening and was instantly awash in emotion. Ran Fan’s eyes snapped open and tears formed at the corners, running down her face. The corners of her mouth twitched just once and Greed knew it was the closest she had ever come to a smile.
Ling nearly collapsed, weak as he was, but he held himself up, his movements not quite as smooth or practiced as Greed’s had been as he rocked within her, and leaned down to brush his lips against hers.
It was all very sweet and more than a little touching, but Greed was ready to have her back and easily displaced the tired prince.
Wait, Ling said, holding on. We can share her.
Greed paused in surprise and looked down at the girl under Its body, wet tracks easily visible on her dusty cheeks. I don’t normally share, you know, It said to Ling and felt Ling acknowledge the fact. But I guess I could make an exception this once.
Afterward, while they helped her cleanse the blood from the inside of her thighs, Greed gave her a curious look. As if she could sense Its unspoken question, she said softly, “I know which is which, inside of you.”
Greed’s eyebrows arched in surprise and It said, “But you let me take you.”
She nodded, awkwardly pulling her shirt back into place with one arm. “He yielded his body to you to gain something he wanted. I did nothing more or less.” She grimaced slightly as she shifted, new pain mixing with old. “That which is temporary is easy to resist.”
She left the rest unspoken and, at that moment, the homunculus couldn’t help but wonder which of the three of them had the greatest greed of all.

Date: 2007-01-30 03:46 am (UTC)But yes, that was what I was thinking of when I wrote the second, how he was always concerned about his ... friends? ... in the Devil's Nest. "Martel? Are you okay? Sorry, forgot you were in there." I do love Greed. He understands that if he wants to keep what he has - and that is what he wants most of all, to have everything he can - that he needs to take care of it.

Date: 2007-01-30 05:51 am (UTC)I like Ran Fan in "Menage a Trois", and her "He yielded his body to you to gain something he wanted. I did nothing more or less" line was simply beautiful.
But the interaction between Greed and Ling just seemed to be lacking something. I think it was the fact that "Menage a Trois" is more dependant on physical description than "Avarice", so the use of It for Greed doesn't work as well. And maybe it's just me, but I had the fleeting thought that "It" seemed like a silly euphemism for the "purple helmeted soldier of love," which is probably not what you were going for.

Date: 2007-01-30 07:03 am (UTC)I really love the first one- Ling/Greed's description of Ran Fan's hair, and the last line- they just slayed me. These were two awesome fics, and I love that you don't make Ran Fan a foolish woman- she knows exactly what she's getting into.

Date: 2007-02-02 12:19 pm (UTC)Nice! These use sensuality very well, and I'm sure they push the right buttons for people. I'm a little uncomfortable with Ling coming up with the idea to share, but then that could be Greed's influence on him as well, which is an interesting idea too.
Good job!

Date: 2007-02-02 05:19 pm (UTC)And I think my idea for Ling coming up with the idea to share was, in my mind, Ling knowing he wasn't strong enough to actually *fight* Greed for control at that moment, and not wanting to lose complete control. Bargaining, as it were. *shrug* Like I said in the A/N, I'm still not quite sure what I think of that one, whether I'm 100% happy with it or not.
But thank you! You do so much better with this pair than I do, so I'm just flattered you comment on mine. *grin*

Date: 2007-02-04 01:41 pm (UTC)I can see where you were going with the idea of Ling trying to salvage the situation. The whole power dynamic with Ling-Lan Fan-Greed can be really tricky to navigate. It's also tricky to get Ling's motivations when the story is in Greed's POV.
But that's what makes writing these guys fun!
